Free and Open-Source Sandbox for Fans of Minecraft

Fans of Minecraft will be pleased to know that there is a new open-source variant of this popular game available to the general public. As Terasology is a user-contributed platform, it is absolutely free to download and enjoy.

Primary Features and Options

Terasology is essentially a clone of the popular Minecraft series of sandbox games. Its graphics are quite similar and many of the same functions are offered. This is a rather new release, so constant improvements are being made. Players can also contribute to different environments as they progress. These worlds will then be incorporated into the gameplay as a whole. It employs Apache 2.0 coding; a benefit for those who are looking for a more user-friendly application.

A Work in Progress

While initially inspired by Minecraft, many will argue that the graphics associated with Terasology are much more realistic and engaging. This is largely due to the fact that "smoother" elements such as water are present alongside the traditional blocks which have made this genre famous. The game is offered as a ZIP file, so its contents will need to be extracted before they are installed.

  • Pros

    • A great alternative for anyone who is a fan of Minecraft.
    • Users can add their code into the larger digital database.
  • Cons

    • Some have reported that many bugs are present during gameplay.
    • There is no information regarding customer support.

User reviews about Terasology

I'm giving it a 5 because I don't want to be rude and give it a bad rating, but I'm also unsure of the game play so I am unable to give it 10. I was really excited to play this, but I can't install it. I tried the 'Need help installing?' thing but it didn't help me at all... I can get it downloaded, but that is as far as I can get... My problem is, it won't even show me how to install it. So you say to follow the instructions it tells you, but I can't even get to those instructions... T^T

Hard to install. Hard to play.. Hard to install. For instance, if you download from here, it won't work. If you read the readme file you will see that it tells you to go instead to the program website. There you download the launcher. After you install it, it can download and auto-install the latest version of the game. When I started playing the game, everything was black. What was going on? Was it night time? Then I realized I had spawned deep underwater and was drowning. Nice original spawn point! So a bit later on I wanted to craft something. I could not figure out how. The game has no instructions, no tutorial, no help menu. I exited the game and searched on the Internet. It turns out that you have to use a mod if you want to do crafting. It also looks like you have to use mods if you want things like monsters and ore to mine, and hunger and other things you would expect to come standard.

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.
